Cosmic Calendar
Inspired by the work of Carl Sagan, the Discovery Education channel has a Cosmic Calendar that shows the history of the universe in one year. It’s a smart way to display long-scale time lines.

I really like this diagram. It seems to pack in a lot of information, yet retain real clarity.
The VFL is—or rather was—the Victorian Football League. It spread its wings and was re-named as the Australian Football League in 1990.
The diagram shows when each team participated in the League and who won the premiership and ‘won’ the wooden spoon.
The background grey gridlines don’t seem to be obtrusive, yet they allow you to see exactly the year in which a team won the Premiership or Wooden spoon. The thin blue and brown lines don’t distract from the overall grey horizontal bars that allow you to see when each team entered or left the League. And the diagram displays the two unusual events with the yellow and black vertical lines and the text explains what they mean.
The image is from the Wikipedia article on the Australian Football League. Wikipedia does not tell us who created the diagram.
